Mounjaro and Weight-Loss Injections: What You Need to Know
The NHS has announced that a new weight-loss injection, Mounjaro (tirzepatide), will soon be available to support people living with obesity. This follows the introduction of other medications such as Wegovy (semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide). Understandably, this news has generated a lot of interest, and many patients have been asking us for more information.
This page offers an overview of Mounjaro and how it, along with other weight-loss injections, may affect access to services through Westongrove.
What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is a new injectable medication designed to support weight loss by helping you feel fuller for longer, which in turn reduces appetite and food intake. Clinical trials have shown that people using Mounjaro lost up to 20% of their body weight.
The NHS plans to start offering Mounjaro initially to people who:
- Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 35
- Have at least one obesity-related health condition (such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease)
Currently, our local health board (BOB ICB) is working on pathways for Mounjaro to be available through specialist NHS weight-management services. A wider rollout—potentially including GP practices—is expected in the future.
When Will It Be Available More Widely?
The NHS has a long-term plan to expand access to Mounjaro over the coming years. However, it’s expected that full availability could take up to 12 years, to ensure services can meet demand safely and effectively.
