Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Weight Management
A new NHS service for Weight Management
Westongrove is now part of a new NHS Locally Commissioned Service (LCS) to support people living with obesity. This programme is designed to help patients improve their health and reduce the risks linked to obesity.
For the first time, the NHS is making Mounjaro (tirzepatide) – a weekly injection that helps with weight loss – available in GP practices, alongside structured support.
What this service aims to do
Improve quality of life and reduce long-term health risks
Identify patients who may benefit from extra support
Safely prescribe medicines such as Mounjaro
Connect patients with wider support, including diet and lifestyle programmes
Who is eligible?
The NHS is rolling out Mounjaro in stages. Eligibility is based on BMI (Body Mass Index) and certain health conditions (called comorbidities).
- The criteria is very strict.
- Patients who are eligible will be identified and contacted directly by the practice.
- Please do not contact the surgery to request Mounjaro — if you qualify, we will invite you for an appointment.
What does the service involve?
IF you are invited to take part, you’ll first have an initial assessment with a trained healthcare professional:
- Check your BMI and medical history
- Review your current medicines and health conditions
- Confirm whether Mounjaro is safe and suitable for you
If you start treatment:
- You’ll have monthly check-ins at the start to review progress and manage side-effects
- You’ll also join an NHS “wraparound support” programme (diet and lifestyle coaching) – this is mandatory to continue treatment
- After 6 months, we’ll check if you have lost at least 5% of your starting weight. If not, we’ll discuss whether to continue or try other options
This isn’t just about the injection
Alongside Mounjaro, you’ll have access to:
- Specialist diet and nutrition advice
- Behavioural and lifestyle coaching
- Help managing food cravings and triggers
- Regular reviews with your GP team
Important things to know
Mounjaro is a new medicine and is under additional safety monitoring.
It is only available on the NHS through the NHS Obesity Pathway — not as a stand-alone injection.
If you are not contacted by the surgery, it is because you do not meet the strict NHS criteria.
Other support for weight loss
If you are not eligible or prefer not to use weight-loss injections, other NHS programmes are available, including:
- Tier 3 weight management services – called Weigh Forward Bucks
- NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (if eligible)
- NHS Type 2 Diabetes Remission Programme (if eligible)
You can also self-refer to Be Healthy Bucks. They provide free, practical programmes designed to help you:
- Lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way
- Get nutrition and exercise advice from trained coaches
- Make small, realistic lifestyle changes that last
