Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Weight Management
A new NHS service for weight management
Westongrove is now part of a new Locally Commissioned Service (LCS) to support people living with obesity. This is part of a national programme to help patients improve their health and reduce the risks linked to obesity.
For the first time, the NHS is making Mounjaro (tirzepatide) – a weekly injection that helps with weight loss – available in GP practices as part of a structured support package.
This new service aims to:
- Improve quality of life and reduce long-term health risks
- Find patients who may benefit from extra support
- Safely prescribe medicines like Mounjaro
- Connect patients to wider support, including diet and lifestyle programmes
Who is eligible?
The NHS is rolling out Mounjaro in stages. Eligibility is based on BMI (Body Mass Index) and certain health conditions (called “comorbidities”).
Year 1 (2025/26)
- BMI 40 or above (37.5 for some ethnic groups*)
- PLUS additional serious health conditions
Year 2 (2026/27)
- BMI 35 or above (32.5 for some ethnic groups*)
- PLUS additional serious health conditions
Year 3 (2027/28)
- BMI 40 or above
- PLUS other health conditions
*For people from South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds, the BMI cut-off is 2.5 lower.
What does the service involve?
IF you are eligible, you will be invited for an initial assessment with a trained healthcare professional. This will include:
- Checking your BMI and medical history
- Reviewing your current medicines and health conditions
- Making sure Mounjaro is safe and suitable for you
If you start treatment:
After 6 months, we will check whether you have lost at least 5% of your starting weight. If not, we’ll discuss whether to continue or try alternative options.
You’ll also be referred to an NHS “wraparound support” programme (diet and lifestyle coaching – mandatory to stay on treatment)
You’ll have monthly check-ins during the first phase to monitor progress and manage side-effects
Ongoing support
This isn’t just about the medicine. Alongside Mounjaro, you’ll have access to:
- Specialist diet and nutrition advice
- Behavioural and lifestyle coaching
- Help managing food cravings and triggers
- Regular reviews with your GP team
If you don’t meet the criteria for Mounjaro, we can still refer you to:
- Tier 2 and Tier 3 weight management services
- NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme
- Type 2 Diabetes Remission Programme (if eligible)
Important things to know
Mounjaro is classed as a new medicine and is under additional safety monitoring.
It is only available through the NHS obesity medication pathway with wraparound support – not as a “stand-alone injection”.
You do not need to contact us to request Mounjaro via the new NHS Service – we will identify and invite patients that are eligible on the NHS for Mounjaro in to the Surgery for a face to face consultation in the autumn.
Next steps for patients
Keep your height, weight and ethnicity up to date with the practice.
Otherwise, please wait – we will contact you if you are identified as eligible.
