At Westongrove Partnership, we want our patients to feel informed and supported. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, but finding it early makes it easier to treat.
What is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer happens when cells in the breast grow in an uncontrolled way.
It can affect women and, more rarely, men.
The exact cause isn’t always known, but age, family history, and certain hormones can increase risk.
Breast Screening (Mammogram)
Breast screening uses an X-ray called a mammogram to check for breast cancer.
It can find cancers that are too small to see or feel.
The test only takes a few minutes and is done by a female radiographer.
You stand in front of the machine and each breast is gently compressed between two plates to take the images. It can feel a bit uncomfortable but only lasts a few seconds.
Who is Offered Screening?
Women aged 50 to 71 are invited every 3 years for breast screening.
Invitations usually arrive in the post.
If you are over 71, you can still have screening every 3 years but you’ll need to arrange it yourself – call our local breast screening unit to book.
Why is Screening Important?
Breast screening saves lives by finding cancers early.
Early detection means more treatment options and a better chance of recovery.
Most women screened will have a normal result.
Checking Your Own Breasts
It’s important to know what’s normal for you. Check your breasts regularly and see your GP if you notice:
- A lump or thickened area in the breast or armpit
- A change in size, shape, or feel of the breast
- Changes to the nipple (inverted, rash, discharge, or bleeding)
- Skin changes (dimpling, redness, puckering, or rash)
- Persistent pain in one part of the breast
Most breast changes are not cancer, but always get them checked.
Reducing Your Risk
While not all risks can be controlled, you can lower your risk by:
Attending your screening appointments
Keeping a healthy weight
Limiting alcohol
Staying physically active
